Watch the video about the 2017 Camp Grief Support Session and hear Morgan's song.

“I wasn’t feeling well, it wasn’t my guitar and it was the wrong key,” Morgan Steubing might tell you.

True – with her own guitar and in a different setting, Morgan sounds even better than she does on the video, but as she sang the song for the other campers for the first time she didn’t know - no one knew - that her song would soon become the sound track for the 2017 Hermann Sons Life Camp Grief Support Session. And no one would argue that she sounds great on the video!

It was the spontaneous nature of Camp that led to Morgan’s song being recorded. On the second night, campers and staff members had gathered outside to sing camp songs and make s’mores. One of the other campers happened to bring his guitar, so as the campers took turns roasting their marshmallows the children and teenagers started singing and rapping to versions of popular songs.

With Morgan playing the guitar, all those around her were mesmerized when she began singing “Say Goodnight,” a song she had written for her sister, Rylan. The song speaks to the many sentiments Morgan feels about not having her sister with her any longer. Because the girls shared a bedroom Morgan’s entire life, they could always “Say Goodnight.” Now they cannot.

Morgan agreed to sing the song one more time. This time Alexandra Eads wanted to record it for the video she planned to make about the Grief Support Session. So the morning of camper checkout, when Morgan wasn’t feeling well, she borrowed the guitar again and sang her song as she sat on the porch steps of one of the cabins.

The video is now being used to spread the word to children who could benefit from the session and to encourage donor engagement.

Morgan has many talents – from chalk pastel art to volleyball to music and more. Her current plans are to attend Texas Lutheran University majoring in architecture with a minor in art or music.

Others have realized her musical talents. Morgan was recently sought out to audition for “American Idol.” Though not selected to appear this season, there is no doubt her song touched the judge.

As mentioned earlier, images from this video were recorded and produced by Alexandra Eads. Alexandra was a volunteer counselor during the Grief Support Session and is a past camper and counselor at Hermann Sons Life Camp. When she was a senior counselor during the summer of 2015, her stepfather died. Learn more about Alexandra’s story.
