We’re focused on Grief Support Services in a big way

Last year we hosted our first ever Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp. Forty children from across the state, members and non-members, came to our Hilltop site and stayed for a half-week camp adventure. This summer, July 8-11, we will once again hold the camp session for children ages 6-17 who are grieving the death loss of a parent or sibling. And we plan to serve even more children.

The opportunity to participate in our special camp session does not cure the grief felt by children, but it does provide support in their grief journey. It is also extremely beneficial to be in the company of other children who are on their own journeys.

When campers arrive, they get to request camp activities to participate in during their stay – activities like rocketry, ceramics, basketball, court hockey, adventures in nature, twirling and more. All campers also get to experience the magic of camp through singalongs, making S’mores, group dining and cabin games.

Children experience a therapeutic side during their stay, too. Therapists and volunteers from the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas lead campers in group therapy healing circles by age group, they provide opportunities for full-group therapeutic activities and more.

The Hermann Sons Life partnership with Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas is at the core of what makes this session work so well. We are proud to provide the best in camping with the best in counseling services.

To gain more insight into the Grief Support Session, read my blog written after last year’s session.

If you know someone between the ages of 6-17 who would benefit from attending this Camp session, send us an email or share this blog. Applicants for the session will be accepted on a first received basis and will go through an interview process with an individual from the Children’s Bereavement Center.

Additionally, we are seeking volunteers to help during the Grief Support Session. Applications for this opportunity are available here. Volunteers will be required to go through a screening process as well as training for the week.

When children lose important people in their lives, it can be hard to find ways to help. This session is one way to help. You can spread the word, volunteer or donate online.
