STEM Exploration: Challenges, robots, science, oh my!

Activities are one of the best parts of Camp. Campers have the opportunity to take part in activities they love as well as experience some new activities. The Camp staff is constantly working to develop new activities we think campers will enjoy. This summer we are excited to offer STEM Exploration for the first time. For those of you unfamiliar with the acronym STEM it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

For years we have offered Rocketry at our Hilltop site but we have not really had anything similar at the Riverside site. We knew we wanted to offer a science-type activity and that is when the idea to add STEM Exploration came to mind. The idea was to mix robotics with a fun team-building challenge.

In STEM Exploration campers begin by completing a STEM challenge. This could be anything from building the tallest tower made of straws to creating the tallest building out of aluminum foil. Campers have an opportunity to be creative and work together with a small group to devise a plan.

Later in the week campers continue working with their team to build a solar-powered robot that they can then test and have small battles with.

The picture on this page is from Session 1. The campers have absolutely enjoyed the class and we hope many more campers will do just the same this summer.
